Renaissance Stained Glass
Stained Glass > Gallery > Art Nouveau (1900-1917)

It is characterized by organic, especially floral and other plant-inspired motifs. In the floral context Art Nouveau is highly influenced by, yet more stylized than, arts and crafts. The roots of these two styles are inextricably linked. First inspired by Japanese wood prints the style greatly influenced the whole of Europe, but the effects were felt globally. The image shown, Nouveau Tree, demonstrates typical reflections of the “Whiplash” lines synonymous with the form. It is asymmetrical yet maintains a balance overall. Famous design studio’s exemplifying this movement include William Morris, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Rene Lalique and Louise Comfort Tiffany, and in its extreme allegorical use Alfons Mucha.
