Federation describes an event and a period of architectural influence. We have included (below) three designs typical to this period. The first shows an asymmetrical entrance using subtle pastel shades but with a more open feel than a Victorian design. The second image demonstrates the use of organically inspired Arts & Crafts detail. The third image shows the use of the newly created (circa 1908) textured glasses. Manufactured by Pilkington, in the UK, many textured glasses found their way to Australia often used as ballast in the holds of ships. Influences for this period include Arts & Craft, late Victorian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau. Of course in Australia we became infatuated with all things native and it is during this very brief period that “Australiana” emerges. In the Victorian section you will see a reference to screen printed motifs. This is another affordable way to incorporate native birds. If this genre appeals to you this would not be out of place in a federation home.
